PGAV Destinations was once again a significant sponsor of our greatest Industrial Designers Society of America – St. Louis Chapter (IDSA-STL) event of the year, occurring annually during the Fall as part of the AIGA STL DesignWeek series. This was previously our Fusion event, which combined an industrial design exposition along with a student competition. This year, however, we decided to break out these two events and hold them over back-to-back weekends:

  • IDSA-STL 2014 AIGA STL DesignWeek event: Maker: A Documentary on the Maker MovementThis included a film screening and reception, held Saturday, September 27th, 2014
  • 2014 IDSA-STL 4th Annual Student Bragging Rights Design Competition, held Saturday, October 4th, 2014

IDSA-STL Chapter Officers:

Though both events were quite different, each helped to bring together students and professionals from the Midwest region in the spirit of design. PGAV Destinations attraction boards, brochures and other marketing visuals were made available at each event to invite dialog for not only the diversity of destination projects that we do at PGAV, but the diversity of talented design disciplines across the PGAV staff as well.

IDSA-STL 2014 AIGA STL DesignWeek event: Maker: A Documentary on the Maker Movement. With film screening and reception

On Saturday, September 27th, 2014, IDSA-STL, at The Luminary, offered a screening of “Maker,” a feature-length documentary on the maker movement and its impact on society, culture and economy within the U.S., intending to encourage dialogue among amateur and ‘professional’ Makers alike.

Tony Schmidt & Jason Mills provided an introduction to the film.

Additionally, to enhance the message, the first 30 attendees received a copy of the book: Makers, by Chris Anderson. Chris Anderson was former editor-in -chief at Wired Magazine from 2001-2012, and this book is packed with great content digging into the Maker culture. Check it out, it’s an awesome read!

Works by some of St. Louis’ industrial design firms along with works from regional artists were on display to promote an atmosphere of creativity, personal initiative, and ingenuity. Lunch and an open bar were provided throughout the reception.

The “Maker Movement,” sometimes called the “Third Industrial Revolution,” subverts traditional manufacturing by building on innovative concepts such as open source, local manufacturing, crowd funding, and digital fabrication. Breaking the hobbyist movement stereotype, “Maker” delves deep into this ecosystem of design and manufacturing within the Internet era. The film screening explored the ideas, tools, and personalities that are driving the Maker Movement, and returns with a timely snapshot of one of the transforming influences of the current age. Originally released May, 2014.
