Space Shuttle Atlantis: Doing Its Job

The "EXPLORE" entrance featuring the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex

Space Shuttle Atlantis: Doing Its Job

Since the very inception of our Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction, its entire mission was to “inspire the next generation of space explorers.”

As destination designers, we can read the reviews on TripAdvisor and hear the verbatims from our clients, but it never hurts to see some evidence of our success.

Part of our master plan for the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex was to redirect incoming guests through the Rocket Garden to come face-to-face sooner with the epic rockets that sent astronauts and satellites into space.

And then they see the towering ET-SRB Assembly, and are drawn like moths to the flame to pass beneath it to enter Space Shuttle Atlantis.

But how effective is the destination at “inspiring the next generation of space explorers”?

Recently, @timdoddphotography posted on Reddit “I took my nephews to Kennedy Space Center two weeks ago; my sister sent me this picture of her fridge” with the following photo:

The photographer received “Reddit Gold,” a rare and highly coveted award given by the Reddit community to posts that are exceptionally interesting and excellent.

Some key user comments:

  • “Lovely reminder of what a big impact you make in their lives”
  • “Good job. Keep inspiring them.”
  • “Those kids probably consider you their hero now. It’s the simple things. That is awesome.”
  • “That place is my Disneyworld.”
  • “Future astronaut there.”
  • “Space shuttle! You got your nephews stoked on science. Nicely done.”

So yes, Space Shuttle Atlantis IS inspiring the next generation of space explorers.

@timdoddphotography shoots photos for Space Flight Now and also runs a hilarious photo project called “Every Day Astronaut.” Definitely check it out.
