The 1904 World’s Fair | Missouri History Museum

The exhibit aims to share the most comprehensive and inclusive story ever told of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, known as the 1904 World’s Fair. We began by designing a scale model. With no blueprints of the Fair remaining, every building and landscape was painstakingly recreated using historical maps and photographs.

An animated color landscape projected onto the model transitions from a lively day in 1904 into an overlay of present-day structures and streets, sparking curiosity about how today’s world interacts with the past. While showcasing the grandeur of the Fair, this 21st-century exhibit also offers an honest portrayal of 1904’s grand event.

Media pieces written and directed by PGAV reveal little-known emotional stories, including the Fair’s overt segregation and its “human zoos” that placed minority groups on display. This powerful narrative unfolds with sensitivity, allowing visitors to connect deeply with history and its complexities.
